Exploration #28 Blind Observation

POCKET OBSERVATIONS:
Pad Lock: cold, Ripple texture, plastic coating, towards the back or bottom
is flat with a sharp hole in it. Their are nobs on the 4 corners of the under
half. The hole for the key is sharp around the edges.

Pocket Watch: Texture of rough and smooth on one side, then one continuous
texture on the other side. A thin object much like a skipping stone one would
find next to a pond. It is light and has a feeling of light metal. A chain is
attached. and it is kind of fun to fiddle with. It feels like a tiny hair might be
able to get caught in it but never does.

Key to Pad Lock: Well it feels like a key but with more textured teeth. The teeth
feel as though they go in a larger key hole. The teeth feel continuous, like a lot
keys have a different different depth the one next to it. This is smooth with identical
gaps in them.

Exploration 1 (Sitting down here)

Exploration 8 (Cracks)

 

Everything here in the cracks Explorations reminds me of clouds in the sky. When I was younger I would always look up at those clouds and imagine that they were something out of a fairy tale. These are only a fraction of what is out their in the pavement. Some one could spend there entire life looking for all the cracks in the earth, but there is no way you could find them all.

Process Presentation

When its time to show process work I feel it is something that struggle with at times. I usually find myself explaining what my feeling were when I was working a project. When explaining the technical side sometimes I become forgetful of what I will say. This my first real discussion about what I put into my work. 

The first I thing that I think about when starting a new project is how my message would be best communicated. Images usually pop into my head, followed by the composition and lastly typography gets in there as well. I find my best resources come from books with graphic works in them, getting an idea of what has already been done, may sound like cheating but I try to be as original to myself and the project as possible. Barnes & Nobles is very useful my research, as well as the local library on campus. Once I have my resources the only on my mind is executing the project. 

The progression of my work usually goes from complex to more simplified, and sometimes it takes a while for head realize what could best simplified. These projects below are the best examples of what concentrated process can help create.

This was a project that I put a lot of personal passion into. This trully felt like my first actual assignment., from my GIC 1 class. The research that went into this assignment was actually quite extensive. However it was enjoyable every bit of the way. I had the privelage of studying Milton Glaser. He in my mind is one of the most influential graphic designers that I have read about. His work is genius, and in many way has inspired me to try and follow his style. The use of illustration mixed with communication was poetry to me. He did several other different mediums but certain piece he did will stay with me forever. That passion allowed me to write about this man with ease. It also made it easy to choose how I want my images to be cropped. The result is what we see here.

 I combined some of his most recognizable works, the Bob Dylan piece. I later found a sketch of his face which to me was perfect, because I was struggling with the decision of using a photo or illustration. Since I the pieces I had up where more illustrated I thought that this would be better. The I love New York piece is in one of the stamps, I feel as i though I would want to change this. Then I have some interior design work that he was involved in, this was know as the Sesame Street theme park which he was in charge of most of the design work. His Push Pin Studios logo was there as well. I will definitely keep studying his way of work, and use it as a tool for this world of design.

This was a troubled assignment and caused me to feel like giving up. Miracles happen in mysterious ways sometimes and that is exactly what happened here. The assignment was to make an information graphic based on a compound word of your choice. A farley simple project that I happened to make too complex. I went with something familiar and fun which was my first mistake. Hot Wheels was what I chose. There were a lot of thing that I knew about it, but breaking up the words using informational diagrams was not

easy as I thought.

The project came along finally at the last minute of the last week when my hard drive failed on me, and I just thought I was screwed. The name of that particular hard drive saved me. Called One Touch, it was quite possibly the worst external hardrive ever. There was a lot I could use for the diagram and boy did I use it. I brought it into class and turned out to be one of my more decent pieces of the semester.

The lesson on branding is irreplaceable. To create a campaign from scratch takes a lot of work but man is it rewarding. My Polar Peace Campaign is now something I would like to peruse even further. Starting off with complex ideas. I was able to learn a bit more about simplicity. Making adjustments made for a more effective message. From the polar bear vector I was able to add more animals using the same style. That was exciting for me. I had a nitch and I used every resource that was available to me. From posters, to buttons, to postcards and t-shirts. It would be fun and rewarding to introduce this to a wild life preservation and have it be used as there logo. Similar to the WWF company that has been keeping the environment safe, and protected.

Any way every ounce of energy went into this project. Every time I would get back to working on it I would find something new and exciting to use. I want thank Alan Harrison for leading down the path of simplicity. I still struggle a bit, but the more I practice being simple the better off I would be. Besides simplicity is something very rewarding if you do your best to live by it.
